EU LEGISLATION

In 2011, for the first time in history, the daily percentage for reference intakes – which is the core of the Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) – was explicitly recognised in EU legislation, i.e. Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers. The Regulation has introduced the term “Reference Intake”, corresponding to the term “GDA”.

Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 stipulates that front of pack nutrition labelling is voluntary. However, if a company decides to apply front of pack nutrition labelling, it is bound to certain rules as prescribed by the legislation (Aricles 30-35).

If your company is interested in applying Reference Intakes, please have a look at our Guidance on Food Information to Consumers, which explains the legal requirements with regard to Reference Intakes, amongst others (see page 40-45).
